There are situations where a six-monthly treatment can make more sense. For example, you may want more regular pest control if your home is close to bushland, waterways or vacant blocks, or if you have had recurring issues with cockroaches, ants or spiders.

Homes with young children, pets or people who are especially uncomfortable around spiders often prefer the peace of mind of a more regular treatment too.

General pest control does not replace a termite inspection.

Termites can cause serious damage without being obvious. They often stay hidden inside walls, under floors, around timber structures or behind built-in areas. By the time you notice visible damage, they may have been active for quite a while.

For most homes, an annual professional termite inspection is a sensible minimum. Some properties may need inspections more often, particularly if there is a history of termites, a lot of surrounding vegetation, timber retaining walls, poor drainage or other conditions that increase the risk.

Wet weather can bring pests out quickly

After heavy rain, it is worth checking around the house for standing water, overflowing gutters, gaps around doors, damaged flyscreens and food sources that may attract pests.

A pest treatment can help, but a few basic habits around the home make a real difference too. Keep bins closed, clear leaf litter from around the house, avoid leaving pet food outside overnight and make sure water is draining away from the building.

Signs you should not wait for your next treatment

Sometimes it is obvious that it is time to call someone sooner. Keep an eye out for:

• Ant trails that keep returning after cleaning
• Spider activity around entrances, outdoor furniture or sheds
• Rodent droppings, scratching sounds or chewed packaging
• Mosquitoes breeding around standing water

With termites especially, do not spray or disturb anything you find. It can make the problem harder to assess properly. Take a photo if you can and arrange an inspection.

The practical answer

For most Sunshine Coast homes, annual general pest control plus regular termite inspections is a solid routine. If your property has ongoing issues or is in a higher-risk area, six-monthly treatments may be worthwhile.

The aim is not to sell you treatments you do not need. It is to give you a realistic plan for your home, so pests do not get the chance to become a bigger problem.
